If you haven’t been to Cancun, odds are you’re well aware of its sandy beaches, bright blue waters and burgeoning resort scene. But you may not be as familiar with Puerto Morelos, a small fishing town in the state of Quintana Roo, and an up-and-coming destination that you should know about. In fact, the town recently celebrated its very first anniversary in January as one of the 11 municipalities of the state and ended a successful 2016 with new and exciting additions.
One highlight of 2016 was the opening of the new Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa (pictured), an adults-only all-inclusive resort boasting 526 suites that made its debut May 2016. A new photo opportunity spot spelling out “Puerto Morelos” in colorful letters opened in June, and in July, the “Soy Cerveza” Beer Festival brought in more than 7,000 thirsty patrons. Looking forward, the destination is hosting the annual Puerto Morelos Fishing Tournament in May, which brings together sport fishing fans from around the world.
Some staples of Puerto Morelos include Selvatica, an adventure ecopark; Ruta de los Cenotes (Cenote Route), a trail featuring eight water-filled cenotes that connect with each other through underground systems; Crococun Zoo, a conservationist interactive adventure zoo; and the National Marine Park, one of the best kept secrets of the Meso American Reef.
