Getting to Xcalak

Rent a car in Cancun and hit the open road for about 240 kilometers (about 150 miles) south to Xcalak (pronounced ish-ka-lak). Drive down Highway 307 to the town of Mahahual. From there, drive another 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) on a bumpy dirt road to reach Xcalak. The drive may be a bit challenging, but the scenery along the way is breathtaking, with views of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean and lush tropical vegetation.

Accommodation

Xcalak has a handful of accommodation options, but for a truly unique experience, consider staying in a rustic cabin or eco-friendly lodge that blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Some of the most popular options include Reef House at Casa Paraiso Xcalak, Costa de Cocos and Sin Duda Villas. Who needs air conditioning when you have a fresh sea breeze to cool you down?

Things to Do

The beaches and clear waters in Xcalak are perfect for snorkeling, diving, and fishing. You can explore the Xcalak Reef National Marine Park, which protects the second-longest barrier reef in the world, and marvel at the diverse marine life that call it home, such as colorful fish, sea turtles and even the occasional manatee. Channel your inner mermaid and take a dip in the Caribbean Sea! Be sure to snap some Instagram-worthy shots while you’re at it.

If you’re feeling adventurous, take a guided tour of the nearby ruins of Kohunlich and Dzibanche that offer a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of the Mayan people. You can also visit the nearby town of Bacalar, known for its beautiful lagoon, which is often referred to as the “Lake of Seven Colors.”

And for those who prefer a more laid-back activity, bird watching is a great way to enjoy the natural beauty of Xcalak, where you can spot pelicans, frigate birds, herons and more.

Food & Drink

After all that activity, it’s time to refuel with some delicious food and drinks. Xcalak may be a small village, but it has some excellent restaurants that serve up mouthwatering seafood and Mexican cuisine. You can also enjoy fresh seafood at one of the casual beachside restaurants, where you can treat yourself to some fresh ceviche, sip on a refreshing margarita and soak up amazing views of the Caribbean Sea.
